There is a lot of talk about air pollution and how it’s damaging the environment, but not a whole lot of talk about soil pollution. Just because people do not have very much information concerning soil pollution, doesn’t imply that it is not just as important as any other type of pollution. It is harder to detect because it occurs under ground and is not so easy to see. Soil could be tested for toxins and to what level are the pollutants present.
Polluted water could seep into the soil making the soil contaminated. When this takes place the soil becomes less productive as the plants, flowers or trees don’t grow as well. Most of the foods we eat have been affected by pollution in the soil and are not very nutritious to eat. With the lack of healthy plants to remove the carbon monoxide from the air, the quality of our air continues to get worse. Almost all soil pollution has come about due to the neglect or blunder of human beings. Chemicals found in storage tanks are placed below the ground, and they usually leak, allowing the chemicals to flow through the soil. This has prompted plants to just quit growing and making the area uninhabitable.
Chemicals enter the soil from a variety of sources, including landfills. Previously garbage from businesses and individuals was dumped in landfills, that did little or no to safeguard the land. With rain or snow, the water could flush any number of chemicals in to the ground. The chemical substances then get into underground water tables or rivers and begin scattering across a region. At least landfills are today doing a lot of things to safeguard the soil from the more harmful chemicals, including putting them in separate areas that have been lined with protective substances.
Pesticide sprays have been sprayed on the land for quite some time, which has also instigated much damage to the soil. Many environmental groups are lobbying the government to safeguard the soil from toxic chemicals. But recently, lots of farmers are going organic and government has imposed strict guidelines for certain pesticides. Companies are initiating changes also including using biodegradable material. The US has the biggest soil pollution problem in the world. Soil pollution in America are a result of no respect for the environment and fast advancement in technology.
Nevertheless, as more men and women find out about soil pollution, the more action is being taken to solve the problem. There are programs appearing throughout the United States to deal with and work on the soil pollution problem. It is great that there are many people who are being more mindful about their health and are concerned about the soil.
